LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Franson

Last week House Republicans released plans for Reform 2.0. During the course of the 2011 session and the government shutdown, we realized that some things about the way our state government functioned were not worth tax payer dollars. Since this year is not a budget year, budget years occur on odd number years and often last five more weeks. The 2012 legislative session is only 10 weeks, and we are making a commitment to focus on reform.

This fall many of our members travelled to dozens of cities and met with hundreds of business owners, local government leaders and interested citizens to gather input on how to reform state and local government. Their ideas are our agenda.

Our goals are to restore confidence and grow the private sector, reform education and health care and reduce the size and cost of government. By bringing reform to each of these areas, I believe that government can produce better and more efficient results for Minnesotans while putting their tax money to good use. So now is the time to stop talking about reform and actually implement it. Below are just a few ways that we can reform government, there will be more details and more reforms to come, but these are just a few examples of what we’d like to accomplish this session:

Jobs and Growing the Economy:
? Create an advisory inspection program so businesses can fix issues without the threat of penalties or fines.
Education:
? Put parent voice in public education by allowing them to petition to turn their failing public school into a charter school.
Health Care:
? Combat Medicaid fraud with up-front screening/detection.
Government Reform:
? Work with local governments to provide requested mandate relief.

When we are in session I will be putting updates on my Facebook group page and would love to hear from you. Please join my group “Representative Mary Franson” and join the conversation for the next 10 weeks during session. I also plan to do weekly Facebook chats, so stay tuned for times and dates.

As we work on these reforms this legislative session, I would encourage you to contact me with any ideas or thoughts you may have. Please feel free to email me at rep.mary.franson@house.mn or contact my office at 651-296-3201
