LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Franson - Budget Surplus

Good news yesterday! State economists have said that the state is finally in the black! They announced a $876 million surplus. Being in the red since 2007 when state economists announced a $1 billion surplus. During the 2011 session Republicans lead the effort to eliminate the $5 billion budget deficit. We accomplished this without raising taxes and by reducing government spending.

In February we will receive an update as to where the budget is at when economists reveal the February forecast. It is my hope that we will be able to start paying back the school shift. I came to St. Paul to do what taxpayers asked, and that was to get our budget moving in the right direction, by reducing spending. Although we are still working on a path to financial stability we are headed in the right direction.

In accordance with state law the funds from the surplus must be used to replenish reserves. $255 million will be used to bring the state's cash-flow account back to a total of $350 million, which is the statutory maximum and the remaining $621 million be used to bring the state's budget reserves to a total of $648 million, $ 5 million below the $653 million statutory maximum.

We must continue to work hard in St. Paul, and I remain committed to not increasing taxes, creating opportunities for job creators to grow their businesses in Minnesota and reigning in government bureaucracy that hurts our small businesses. Minnesota should be a place where businesses thrive and grow and are not restrained by big government and runaway spending.

Have a great weekend!

Mary
