Today child care providers can rest easy, a Ramsey County Judge ruled in favor of child care providers who filed a lawsuit against the union election of subsidized child care providers. This decision will halt the election proposed to take place between December 7th and December 21st. Both parties will meet again in the courtroom on January 16th.
I am pleased that the judge ruled in favor of the child care providers. These Minnesotans operate private independent businesses and do not want a union intruding on their business. I am glad the judge agrees. This is an issue the legislature needs to vote on in the form of a bill, and not be forced on providers by an executive order.
Ballots were set to be mailed out beginning December 7th and having a vote total by December 22nd. The election was ordered only for subsidized child care providers, which is about 4,300 providers in the state. Minnesota currently has 11,000 in-home child care providers, 7,000 in-home providers would have been excluded from a vote because they do not care for subsidized children.
Please stay tuned as we will have more information on this in the coming days. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.
Have a great day!
