This Friday, November 11th, we celebrate Veterans Day. A time for Americans to reflect on the bravery of so many men and women who sacrificially served our country in the United States Armed Forces. It is also a time to thank our veterans, if you see a veteran this weekend or any time of the year, shake their hand and thank them for their service.
Veterans Day was established in November as “Armistice Day” in 1919 by President Wilson, one year after World War l had ended. He commemorated that day by saying, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
In 1954, after World War ll the law was amended to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day, honoring all those who have served our country in war and in peace time. Preserving November 11th as Veterans Day provides everyone the opportunity to take this day to celebrate and remember those whose commitment to freedom keeps us free today.
I would encourage you to find ways in your community to give back to those who have served to give us so much. There are many ways to volunteer whether through community outreach programs or through the Veterans Affairs office. The Department of Veterans Affairs website has more information about volunteering. http://www.volunteer.va.gov/
May we never forget the sacrifice of our Veterans.
Have a great weekend!
