SPECIAL SESSION UPDATE

News From Representative Franson

The governor has now called a special session and although the deal that has been struck is not ideal we need to pass a budget and get Minnesota moving again. Minnesotans have sacrificed much of their summer over this government shutdown and it is time to bring it to an end.

Governor Dayton originally proposed that Minnesota would have one of the highest income tax rates in the United States at almost 11% as well as corporate taxes, sales tax and health care surcharges. These new tax increases would have been devastating to Minnesota and I am glad that the governor decided to drop these increases in order to end this government shutdown.

I was also disappointed to hear that Governor Dayton would not allow lawmakers to keep the Human Cloning Prohibition Act in the Higher Education budget bill. I believe that ethics need to be taken into consideration when advancing new technology in the medical field. While I do feel there are benefits to certain types of stem cell research, ethics play a major role and we cannot continue using human embryos for research. It is my hope that the Governor will take this important legislation into consideration again next year. Attached is a letter I sent to Governor Dayton.

As we move through this special session and pass these budget bills please feel free to take a look at them for yourself on the Minnesota House website: http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/ss2011/

Have a great day!

Mary
