Huge Victory for Republicans as Dayton Accepts Drops His Tax Hikes!
On Thursday Governor Dayton said that he would agree to the Republicans proposal made on June 30th to end the government shutdown that has now loomed for 2 weeks. The governor said he would agree to our budget proposal on his three conditions. Governor Dayton took the state of Minnesota hostage with the hopes of a tax increase, and while he traveled the state for two weeks with his tax increase plan, and when the public disagreed, the Governor decided to take the Republicans proposal, therefore proving that we could have avoided the longest state shutdown in history.
While details continue to be worked out by Republican legislative leaders and the governor, we will not be raising taxes. Although the governor has traveled the state and has consistently sent the message that the only way to solve the budget deficit was to raise taxes, we have stopped his tax increases.
Governor Dayton wanted the school shift to be 50/50 but we negotiated that to 60/40 and the tobacco fund will be used to provide better health care access. Although this is not a perfect deal, this shutdown needed to come to an end.
Job creation and Minnesota’s economy will grow and thrive without a tax increase, and keeping the tax burden low on Minnesotans will help them to thrive and encourage business growth. We need our businesses to want to come to Minnesota, not the other way around.
Reform is a key component to the Republican budget. As details continue to be worked out for a final budget deal, it is my hope that we will be able to negotiate a few structural, long-term reforms that are needed. In the end we did not raise taxes and for that Minnesota’s future is brighter.
Have a great weekend!
