Representative Fabian to stand against proposed ban on wolf hunting season

Twin Cities legislators want a five year moratorium on wolf hunting

ST. PAUL—State Representative Dan Fabian, R-Roseau, is prepared to challenge a recent bill that would ban the state’s wolf hunting season for five years. Senate File 666 is authored by three state senators from the Twin Cities.

“Over the last two years I have spoken with many farmers, cattle ranchers and turkey growers across Northern Minnesota whose businesses are suffering because of widespread wolf depredation,” Fabian said. “I have personally seen and heard about the destruction caused by wolf overpopulation, and I’ve made a long-term commitment to protect the livelihoods of our small business owners. I stand prepared to challenge any attempt to ban wolf hunting in the state.”

Minnesota held its first managed wolf hunting and trapping season this winter. “The decision to create a wolf hunting and trapping season was not a knee-jerk reaction, but unfortunately, the push to overturn it is,” Fabian explained. “Losing livestock to wolves is a reality that, sadly, the Twin Cities authors of this bill simply don’t seem to understand or care about. Our state’s wolf hunting season serves to give small business owners some peace of mind to control their own destiny; it does not exist to wipe out the entire wolf population.”

House File 666 is awaiting a hearing in the Senate Environment and Energy committee. To share a story about the effects of wolf depredation to be used as testimony, please contact Rep. Fabian at rep.dan.fabian@house.mn, 651-296-9635 or by mail: 307 State Office Building, 100 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.
