LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Fabian

Job creation continues to remain our number one priority. The permitting bill I authored passed the House this week and during the floor session Rep. Anzelc offered an amendment to the bill that would speed up the permitting process for a company called Magnetation. It is an iron-ore company that reclaims minerals through a patented process they have invented.

Through the permitting bill I have authored, HF 2095, the state’s environmental review process would be able to be completed within about 10 months, and would help keep Magnetation in Minnesota, where they can hire Minnesotans instead of moving to another state with their operations.

Ultra Green is a Minnesota based company in Plymouth that is expanding outside of Minnesota. Although the permitting process is only one part of keeping Minnesota competitive, we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to help Minnesota based companies grow and stay in Minnesota. It is my intent through my efforts to streamline the permitting process to help companies like Ultra Green, find it easier to grow in Minnesota.

The Voter ID bill also passed the House this week, which I voted for. This bill allows the voters of Minnesota to decide whether a photo ID should be presented at the time of voting. The question on the ballot would be: Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to require all voters to present valid photo identification on Election Day and that the state provide free identification to eligible voters?

On Wednesday I met with Sarah Erickson, Captain of the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team. Sarah is originally from Roseau, and is a former student of mine. I was happy to introduce Sarah to our caucus this week and congratulate her on the Gophers women’s hockey team national championship win.

I visited with Representatives from Roseau, Marshall and Pennington Counties who visited St. Paul this week to discuss issues with the DNR such as ditch taxes, local beaver control, PILT payments and a number of other issues of concern. I’d like to thank Regional Director Lori Dowling for her hard work at the DNR, and Commissioner Landwehr for attending our meeting.

If you haven’t yet, please participate in my 2012 legislative survey, we will be closing it soon.

Have a great weekend!

Dan
