LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Fabian

The farm implement brake safety bill I introduced has passed through committees and is now ready to be heard on the House floor. This bill gives farmers and farm machinery implement dealer’s greater ability to drive and tow farm equipment. One of the restrictions is that a towing vehicle must have brakes that can stop it and implement it is towing and, in some cases, the current law requires that the farm machinery that is being towed have brakes. Current law restricts moving some modern farm equipment on the road at all.

Because of these issues, this bill would update the current statutes to accommodate the towing of these implements on the roads while at the same time providing braking requirements to assure that a towing vehicle has the capabilities of safely stopping the load. This bill is supported by the Department of Transportation and the State patrol. I’d like to thank Gene Halverson of the Department of Transportation and Rich Strom of the Minnesota South Dakota Farm Equipment Dealers Association for their support of this bill.

On Wednesday my TB Bovine bill passed the Property Taxes Committee and next stop will be the House floor for a vote and with Senate approval will go to the governor’s desk for his signature.

The K-12 education shift payment bill passed the House floor on Thursday. This should be a bi-partisan effort and I look forward to Governor Dayton signing this bill. We are making sound fiscal decisions by reducing the state’s debt burden. This is a common sense approach to paying back the school shift, and the people of Minnesota have spoken loud and clear they want the shift paid back. I would encourage school boards, superintendents and administrators to call the governor and ask him to sign this legislation.

I’d like to also thank the Thief River Falls Chamber of Commerce for visiting with me at the Capitol and for coming to St. Paul for MN Business Day on the Hill.

On Tuesday I met with Andy Hedlund from Central Boiler, I’d like to thank him for making the long trip down to St. Paul.

We are making progress with the Game and Fish bill and I would like your feedback concerning hunting and fishing licenses fee increases. Your thoughts on this issue are very important to me. Please send me an email at rep.dan.fabian@house.mn or call me at 651-296-9635.

Have a great weekend!

Dan
