On Thursday I introduced a bill, HF 2484, to require that the DNR allow for Timber Wolf hunting season to start no later than the first day of firearms deer hunting season. You can find more information here.
On Wednesday I met with the Minnesota Wheat Growers Association including representatives Jon Knudson, Kim Knudson and James Dodds.
This week I also had a meeting with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities President, Steven Rosenstone. We talked about bonding requests for the Unmanned Aerial Systems program at Northland Community and Technical College. I emphasized to him that I am a strong supporter of NCTC’s expansion of the UAS program. Its potential for economic growth and job creation is tremendous.
The need for skilled workers in Northwestern Minnesota is great, and in speaking with numerous local business owners I’d like to have a conversation about how to better approach our high school and college students learning these needed skills. We are in the process of scheduling meetings for those who are interested in exploring this topic. We are also working to figure out what we can do to coordinate with high schools and local colleges to reduce the need to spend more on tuition for certain classes that could be learned in high school. Is there a way to coordinate between the high school and local colleges and universities to make sure that our students are learning the skills they need to be successful workers without driving them further into debt?
There is a great need for skilled welders in Northwest Minnesota. If we can put our high school students who are interested in welding, on the right track to pursue a career in welding without accumulating much financial debt while also helping meet a need in the business community - this would be a win-win for everyone.
Wetlands continue to impact our farmers and I am committed to reforming these rules and making them less burdensome. These rules should make it easier for farmers, businesses, and local governments to work through mediation processes.
Every 10 years after a census is taken, the state must redraw the legislative and congressional district lines. The new map was released on Tuesday. To find more information about the redistricting process, please visit the state geographic information services website.
There has been much discussion surrounding House File 1858, which would limit the operating referendum election to the November election day during the even-numbered year, unless the election is conducted by mail ballot or held by a district in statutory operating debt.
Referendum elections are a local control issue, and at times at the legislature we disagree, and this is one of those instances. These types of elections should be left up to the decision of the school boards; they are elected for this reason.
Also, please take my 2012 legislative survey if you haven’t already.
