LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

House File 1890, which I am introducing, will help mitigate costs to some Minnesota farmers who experienced costs associated with Bovine TB. Minnesota discovered TB in the Northwestern part of the state and set up a containment plan that involved a lot of testing over a period of years to monitor the situation. As the testing and containment involved a lot of costs, different help was made available including property tax credits. Those credits were to end when MN was deemed "TB Free" again. The USDA has approved MN's application for statewide bovine TB free status, effective October 4th, 2011.

There are still some tests that will be done on herds in our area of the state, the costs for which are paid by Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The extension of the property tax credit is to give farmers continued assistance. The property tax credits will only go to farmers located in the Management Zone. The testing and restrictions will continue in this area until the state determines they are no longer required. The tax credit will continue until these restrictions are lifted, which the state assumes will be a year and a half.

On Thursday I attended a meeting in Roseau to address the Timber Wolf hunting issue. Over 175 ranchers and deer hunters attended the meeting.
The hunters and ranchers at the meeting expressed the need to remove potentially dangerous wolves to protect their cattle, sheep, horses and turkeys, and to have the freedom to do so. They are opposed to a lottery, and want a number larger than 400 for the quota. Many of the hunters expressed that they favor wolf hunting to coincide with deer hunting season. The DNR has said that Timber Wolf hunting season could begin this fall.

I will keep you up-to-date, as this issue progresses and more information becomes available.

Have a great week,
