Last week I attended the dedication of a sculpture depicting the Roseau area, sculpted by Sue Suess and her husband Joel Miller. The sculpture is on display on the west bank of the Roseau River near the Roseau Civic Center on Highway 11. Integrated into the all-metal sculpture are 21 images that reflect the heritage of the Roseau River Valley. Sue has been working on this sculpture since 2008. She received a grant to help finance the project from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
On Wednesday I had breakfast in Warroad with a few folks after a KQ92 radio interview. In both cases we discussed the surplus in the budget, child care unionization and my ideas for the next legislative agenda. On Wednesday I was invited by Curt Ireland to attend the Northwest Regional Emergency Services meeting in Bemidji.
Friday, I toured PODCO, a company in Lancaster owned by Randy and Arlen Nordin, with a patented formula that makes a decorative coating for a number of products. This is a great company providing jobs in Northwest Minnesota.
On Friday I met Dean Byfuglien of Byfuglien Trucking to discuss a recent inspection by Minnesota OSHA that resulted in a citation, and told they would be fined, as a result of not having the Employee Right To Know poster displayed and a plan in place for informing employees as to what their rights are. This is an example of how government should not work.
Speaker Zellers made his way up to Warroad on Thursday. We got to see how round top windows are made as a part of our tour Marvin Windows and Doors. Marvins is another example of a great doing great work, providing jobs and products. We met with citizens from the Warroad area and spoke about how we can spur more job growth in the coming session.
The Marco grand opening was this week and I’d like to congratulate Tony Dorn Jr. and the entire staff, and wish them good luck in the future. The Dorn Family has been in the copy machine business in Thief River Falls for several years and has now made the transition to Marco.
Wednesday was a busy day, with a meeting at Northland Community Technical College. At the meeting President Ann Temte and her staff, Rep. Bob Gunther, Commissioner Mark Phillips and I discussed the Unmanned Aerial Systems program that is getting its "wings" at NCTC. As I have said before this program has the potential to be a huge economic engine in Northwest Minnesota. I also met with local officials and community residents to listen to their housing concerns in the area. Representatives from NCTC as well as those who work in construction building homes, city council people and others listened to ideas presented by various agencies that may help address the housing shortage in Thief River Falls. If folks have questions or need to contact someone at an agency, I would encourage them to contact my office, I am more than happy to help.
Thursday morning I was the guest of Ron Engelstad. He invited me to ride with him in his semi when he took a load of wheat to the Northwest Grain facility in Hazel, MN. While there I had the opportunity to visit with some of the employees. Thanks to Ron and the Northwest Grain employees for the good conversation and coffee.
On Thursday evening I attended the Roseau School Board meeting, at the invitation of Superintendent Larry Guggisberg, to discuss our education bill, passed in the last session, and listened to the concerns of the Board going into the next session. Superintendent Guggisberg and the Board were appreciative our mandate relief they received as a result of our education bill. After that meeting I attended the pinning ceremony for the NCTC nursing students at the Roseau City Center. These students have worked very hard to get their LPN courses completed! I was so glad to see the support that they have received from their families and friends during their time in school. Several of them are married and have children.
Have a great weekend!
Dan
