LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

This week has been a busy week in education and natural resources for me. I have participated in a number of meetings on education reform. Making sure that our students can receive a top notch education is very important to me and I am privileged to serve on the House Education Finance Committee. I look forward to continuing to improve our education system here in Minnesota in 2012.

Last Friday I met with Representatives Kiel, Hancock, and Persell as well as Commissioner Landwehr from the DNR. The topic of our meeting was the LaSalle Lake property. I encouraged the commissioner to move forward with the private/public partnership on the operation of the property.

Wednesday morning I met with the Roseau River Watershed board of directors and representatives of the DNR regarding areas of water impoundment for flood control. We need to keep moving forward with plans for retention areas.

On Wednesday I also met with representatives of Kittson, Roseau and Marshall Counties along with Commissioner Landwehr. Several topics were discussed including flood control, DNR land holding, ATV access and DNR public relations in general. Again, I encouraged the commissioner to make changes needed in DNR policies and procedures to make improvements in the relations with local governments and citizens.

On Thursday I met with Paul Telander and his staff at the northwest Regional office in Bemidji. The main topic was the concern of some local hunters and the planned timber harvest in the Elm Lake area. At the meeting I was assured that the timber area would not be made into a natural grassland after the timber harvest was completed.

On Friday I participated in a panel discussion in Brainerd with the Minnesota Rural Education Association. MREA is an association of 140 school districts located in rural Minnesota. I was part of a panel discussion with the members of MREA, also included was Senator Al DeKruif, Rep. Sondra Erickson, Rep. Larry Howes, Rep. John Ward and Rep. Mindy Greiling. We answered a lot of questions raised by rural educators and discussion focused on funding, education reforms, mandate relief and student achievement. We also talked about local levy votes. Superintendent Brad Homstad and school board member Julie Sjostrand from the Lancaster School District were also in attendance. Thank you to Sam Walseth for inviting me to be a part of this panel. I enjoyed working with Sam during the legislative session, and look forward to working with him again during the 2012 legislative session, working toward positive education opportunities for rural Minnesota.

The High School Page Program is an exciting opportunities at the Minnesota Capitol for juniors in high school. Participants in the program assist members in floor activities as well as learning more about state government and legislative policy. The Minnesota House of Representatives is now accepting applications from high school juniors wanting to participate. Applications are due by December 16th, 2011. This is a great educational opportunity for our young people and it is my hope to see many students from District 1A next session.
