LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

Another busy week has come and gone. I enjoy meeting so many people in so many different venues. The concerns of the people I represent are very important to me.

Last Friday I attended a meeting at the Agassiz National wildlife. At the meeting I wanted to find out more about an issue regarding a wetland easement on a farm in the Grygla area. At the end of the meeting with the USF&W personnel I encourage them to be good neighbors with the local citizens who are impacted by their decisions and actions. A short tour concluded my time at Agassiz.

Ron Byklum invited me to attend the Veterans Memorial fund raiser in Grygla on Saturday. I enjoyed the dinner and visiting with several people from the Grygla area who were in attendance. There was a good turnout and it is my hope that this lasting statue will help us all to stop and remember those who sacrifice so much for our freedom. I encourage you to support the memorial too, by "buying a brick".

The week of October 24th-28th was Minnesota Manufacturing week. Congratulations and thank you to all the great manufacturers and their employees that call Northwest Minnesota home. Manufacturers employ 7,253 people in Northwest Minnesota. On Monday I attended a breakfast, at the city center in Roseau that honored our local manufacturers. At the event four local students, Ryan Modahl, Carla Nielson, Rose Gracza, and Abigail Erickson, were recognized as essay contest winners. Congratulations to all of them for their outstanding achievement!

The Quin Community Health Services advisory committee met on Monday afternoon in Greenbush. I attended the meeting and took part in the discussion of many topics and listened to several reports. Thanks to Rachel Green and all the staff for the great work they do delivering high quality care and services to our area.

Monday evening found me in Thief River Falls at the home of Dr. Ty Birkeland, as he hosted the quarterly Northland Community & Technical College Foundation meeting. The foundation is doing great work supporting the mission and the students of NCTC. Thanks to Dr. Ty and all the board members.
Tuesday and Wednesday I attended meetings with DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr. We toured LaSalle lake, and had discussions about the future of LaSalle. I encouraged the commissioner to form as much of a public-private partnership as possible. Wednesday we met in Hallock with several elected officials from around Northwest Minnesota. Lots of issues were discussed and lots of very frank conversation was had regarding the DNR and its need to improve relations in the area. I emphasized to Commissioner Landwehr that will be best accomplished by changing many of the past practices of the DNR. Communication is good but actions speak louder than words. Thanks to Lori Dowling, the new Northwest Minnesota regional supervisor of the DNR for organizing the meetings over the two days. She is doing an excellent job working with local people, officials and area legislators.

The Northstar Agri Industries canola crushing plant near Kennedy is making steady progress. Thanks to Matt Kuzel for the tour on Wednesday. Matt told me that they hope to have all the buildings ready for inside winter work in the next few weeks. Northstar Agri Industries is holding a job fair on two Saturdays coming up, November 12th and December 3rd. Go to www.northstaragri.com for more information.

Enjoy the great fall weather.

Dan
