LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

Last weekend I attended the Excellence in Action education conference in California. I received a scholarship to attend the conference so it didn't cost the state any money. Many legislators from around the country came to this education conference to listen and learn about how we can do education better in our communities.

Notable key note speakers included: Former Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush; Melinda Gates, Bill Gates’ wife and education advocate; and News Corp founder, Rupert Murdoch.

The main focus of the conference was improving K-12 education. As the U.S. continues to trail other nations in terms of student achievement worldwide, we need to collaborate and find ways to improve student achievement. During the conference we participated in strategy sessions to talk about reforms that will equip teachers and students to excel.

Digital learning was another topic covered at the conference. As our students continue to use more and more technology every day, they are learning to adapt to that form of receiving information. We need to consider providing that type of technology to educate our children.

On Monday I met with Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius to discuss the waiver to opt out of the Federal No Child Left Behind program. This is a bi-partisan effort to opt out of Federal NCLB. Commissioner Cassellius said the elements required in the application for the waiver are items that were already addressed in the K-12 budget passed by the legislature this year.

On Thursday I met with business leaders, local and county officials, and school superintendents in Crookston to discuss reform ideas for the 2012 legislative session. Also attending the meeting was Representative Deb Kiel and House Majority Leader Matt Dean. Many ideas included mandate reform as well as reducing restrictions placed on communities and businesses by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. We also talked about having more certainty in funding, especially at the local levels. 40 people were in attendance.

After the Reform meeting I attended the Brain Injury Forum at the Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Thanks to Tawnya Panek for extending the invite. About 30 people were in attendance and we listened to concerns extended by the families of brain trauma victims regarding services available to them.

This past week I also visited with officials heading up the Unmanned Arial Systems program at NCTC. They recently received a grant that allows them to move forward with this great program. We also had a discussion about the future mission of Northland. Thanks to President Anne Temte for including me in this discussion.
