POST SESSION UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

The Republican legislature has now offered Governor Dayton a balanced budget and two compromises and what has the governor done, proposed to tax the people of Minnesota. We have yet to see a complete detailed budget from the Governor. With only 8 days until the Governor Dayton allows a Government shutdown, we need to him to call us back. A shutdown is completely avoidable.

Republicans presented the governor with a balanced budget that increased funding for Education and Health and Human Services. The Legislature also sent to the governor bills that would increase K-12 education funding by $450 million. In the Health and Human Services budget we passed an overall increase in funding for nursing homes of $57 million and the Governor’s budget provides for an increase to nursing facilities of only $11.7 million.

Republicans have also sent the Governor two compromises. The first was to meet his funding requests for education, the courts and public safety. These three elements make up almost half of the general fund budget. Last week another compromise was presented that would eliminate the tax relief for middle class Minnesotans from the Legislature’s budget in exchange for the governor to eliminate his tax increases. Governor Dayton said that these proposals were “extremely disappointing” and rejected them. So now with 8 days to go I would ask the Governor to present us with a compromise or take our offer. We are running out of time, and there is absolutely no reason to put 36,000 Minnesotans out of work, closer our parks, and shut the government down. This is avoidable.

The governor needs to call us back to work.

At the end of last week I went to Karlstad and stopped into a few café’s to say hi to some folks. I also attended the Roseau school district board meeting.

And this week I dropped in to the Caribou Grill in Hallock and also met with Kittson county commissioners as well as Dale Nelson of the MarKit landfill.
Representative Kiel and I also attended the Marshall county board meeting on Tuesday. I was live on the radio Wednesday in Warroad and Roseau, thanks to KKWQ and KCAJ for having me on. On Thursday I had a meeting with Gary Hall, the assistant commissioner for OSHA workman’s comp in St. Paul to advocate for one of my constituents.

If you would like to schedule a meeting or have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Dan
