POST SESSION UPDATE

News From Representative Fabian

Friends –

We have brought forward a balanced budget proposal of $34 billion. This is a six percent increase from the $31 billion Minnesota spent in the last budget. Governor Dayton is proposing to spend $36 billion; we simply do not have that much money available in Minnesota's check book. This is the largest budget Minnesota has ever had. Like most Minnesota families and businesses, Government must live within its means, and make sure we are not spending more than we have.

Spending money that we don’t have and raising taxes will not solve our state’s budget situation, it will not create more jobs, and it will not put our economy on a sustainable path for the future long term. Our budget increases education funding 3.2 percent, which is an increase of over $400 million, it provides $570 million more in Health & Human Services funding and offers tax relief to businesses and middle-income Minnesotans. For people to say that this is an all cuts budget is simply not true. As the days go by I am waiting for Governor Dayton to call a special session.

I was invited to attend various meetings and functions this week. Thanks to all the members of the Thief River Falls Rotary Club for their hospitality as well as their questions regarding the budget and the legislature in general. Thanks also to the Roseau River Watershed District Board of Managers for keeping me informed as to the progress of various flood mitigation projects in the area. I was encouraged by the presence, at the meeting, of DNR officials who are willing to work with the Board to find long term solutions to flooding.

Anne Temte, president of Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls, and Dan Klug, invited me to take part in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Action Summit at the Alerus center in Grand Forks. At the summit Northrup Grumman donated to NCTC a full scale mockup of a Global Hawk, which is an unmanned aircraft that has been used primarily for military and border security missions. Scott Fletcher is heading a program at NCTC that will use the Global Hawk as a tool in the aviation program. The potential for growth in this program at NCTC is very exciting and has the potential to make NCTC in cooperation with UND a major player in the future of the Unmanned Aircraft systems.

Please feel free to contact me at anytime to discuss issues or to schedule a meeting in your community.

Sincerely,
Dan
