Friends –
This week is a bit of a shorter week for the Legislature as we observe the Easter holiday. While on this break, I have been hosting town halls across my district. Many people have share with me their concerns and it is my hope to address them in the last few weeks of session in St. Paul. Some of the issues of concern were DNR land surveys, local government aid as well as school funding.
I will be meeting with DNR officials on Friday. If you have concerns about land surveying, please email me your concerns or mail them to my office along with a map. Also, remember to send your concerns and a map to your local DNR officials. We will be dealing with these concerns on a case-by-case basis.
Local Government Aid (LGA), in the House budget bill, is set to stay the same as the 2010 levels and at the levels cities certified for in 2010. Cities that will see a reduction in LGA include: Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth.
In the House K-12 Education budget smaller schools will see a funding increase in regards to per-pupil funding as well as increased funding for schools with less than 1,000 students.
Funding for flood diversions in Roseau is also a concern I am hearing about. I am working with the local watershed board to find solutions for flood retention areas in watershed districts throughout 1A.
It is my hope that the budget bills that passed the House and after they are finalized will be signed by the Governor. Many of the provisions in these bills will benefit our district.
Last week I met with a class of 6th graders from Lancaster Elementary School. We talked about the legislature and how a bill is passed and becomes law. I also reminded them to work hard in school and never to let anyone tell them that coming from a small town is a disadvantage, it is not. I was very proud of the way they conducted themselves and I am glad they came for a visit to the Capitol.
I hope that everyone has a safe and blessed Easter!
Sincerely,
Dan
