Friends –
This week has been a challenging week here in the state legislature. We are tackling the budget in our committees and budget targets were released on Thursday.

I also am proud to have had Nick Corbit from Roseau High School at the Capitol serving as a page. Nick was a student of mine at Roseau High School. You did a great job Nick!

In the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources committee we finished hearing testimony from a number of different agencies from the DNR to the Public Utilities Commission on their budget requests. Now it is up to our committee to take the testimonies into consideration as we put together our budget for these agencies.

In the Education Finance committee we will be reviewing House File 533 the Lancaster Sparsity Revenue bill next week. Superintendent Brad Homstad, from the Lancaster school district will be testifying before committee members on this bill. This bill would adjust sparsity revenue eligibility criteria, and the independent School District No. 356, Lancaster, would be permitted to recover sparsity aid that the district lost due to the closing of a school building.
This week budget targets came out from House committees, a first step in balancing the budget. It is time to get our economy back on track and stop over-spending. We need to get Minnesotans back to work. Lawmakers project $3.6 billion in reductions for future spending along with reducing agency funding by 15 percent across the board. The budget targets also funds priorities while slowing the growth of government spending to 13.1%. According to current statute, projected spending at the auto-pilot rate of 29% which would translate to a $39 billion budget for this biennium, which would then translate into spending money we don’t have. We have got to live within our means.
