Friends –
This week state economists issued their "February forecast" with the latest revenue projections for the next biennium, FY 2012 - 2013. The budget forecast shows how much revenue we can expect so that we can continue setting the state budget. In the last forecast, it was estimated that state revenues would increase from approximately $30 billion to $32 billion, revenue is set to increase by 8.8% and spending is set to increase by 28%. We should be able to live within the estimated 8.8% of increased revenue. Because we spend more than we have we are facing a very large deficit now at just over $5 billion.

It is good to see an up-tick in the economy, but we need to continue to be cautious making decisions in the legislature. It is not a good idea to risk putting the brakes on economic recovery by raising taxes on our job providers. I continue to believe our economic recovery is result of putting people back to work. Unemployment went from its highest rate at 8.5% in 2009 to what it is now at 6.7%. It is good to see unemployment numbers coming down. I am also happy the Governor has backed off of adding a 5th tier bracket in income taxes.

The $1 billion increase in revenue came without raising taxes, and without changing tax policy at the state and federal level. Now we will have a near 10% increase in revenue that we did last year. We are currently looking at ways to make government more efficient. Minnesota farms, businesses and families have become more efficient and we need to do the same in our government.

I also wanted to congratulate the Warroad Warriors girls hockey team on winning the state championship. Way to go!
I also want to congratulate Karley Silvester on winning the Ms. Hockey award. This award goes to the top high school girls hockey player in the State of Minnesota. Great job Karley!

Governor Dayton signed HF 1 on Thursday signing into law the environmental permitting bill. Check out this article by Minnesota Public Radio about environmental permitting: http://goo.gl/EW8Zw and this article by the Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/117375933.html
