St. Paul – Governor Dayton released his budget proposal today and was joined by Commissioner Jim Schowalter, members of his Cabinet, and officials from Minnesota Management and Budget. The Governor proposed tax increases and additional funding to government programs as well as increased funding to K-12 education.
“Governor Dayton’s proposed tax increases will close the door even further to new business and business expansion here in Minnesota taking jobs and with them to other states and thus hurting our states’ economy,” said Rep. Fabian. “We cannot burden Minnesotans with tax increases like this and expect jobs to be created and the economy to turn around, it simply won’t happen.”
With Governor Dayton’s plan a 4th and 5th tier to the tax rate system would be added and the 4th tier would make us the second highest taxed state in the nation at 10.95% just shy of the highest states, Oregon and Hawaii, who are taxed at 11% each. Minnesota will be the highest taxed state in the nation at 13.95% with the 5th tier to the bracketing system.
“This would give Minnesota the unenviable distinction of having the highest tax rate in the United States at 13.95%,” Rep. Fabian added. “I have great faith in the ability of our businesses to create private sector jobs if we give them the tools that they need to create those jobs. The highest tax rate in the country is not in that tool box.”
