St. Paul – On Thursday night the Minnesota House of Representatives passed an early action budget bill, proposed by House Republicans who currently hold the majority. This bill is said to reduce the budget deficit by $1 billion. At the start of session three and a half weeks ago, a looming $6.2 billion deficit faced the State Legislature. And House Republicans aim to reduce that deficit with this budget bill.
“This bill will not only reduce our budget deficit by $1 billion, but it will also change how we see spending at our state agencies,” said Rep. Fabian. “Our government needs to be accountable when it comes to using taxpayer dollars.”
The budget deficit totaled $5 billion in 2010 and the beginning of this session legislators are faced with a looming budget deficit of $6.2 billion in 2011. This bill also makes one-time reductions from this year permanent and it also would prevent state agencies from spending unnecessary funds at the end of the year.
“Our hard-working Minnesota families live within their means everyday and it is time government started doing the same. We can’t spend more than what we have,” said Rep. Fabian.
