ST. PAUL – State Representative Mike Benson (R-Rochester) said the Minnesota House Republican budget plan unveiled on March 10 was difficult to assemble, but forces government to reform the way it operates and live within its means.
“We’re making tough choices with this budget, but it’s the responsible way to go,” Benson said. “We have to respect the taxpayers and ensure that government spend only what it has available.”
Benson noted that reforms and spending reductions are highly utilized in the Republican plan, and help eliminate most of Minnesota’s projected $5.1 billion budget deficit. In all, $3.6 billion is cut from future spending – or a 13.1 percent reduction from projected levels.
Benson said it was critical to fund priorities and not the bureaucracy in this proposal, as nursing homes are protected and K-12 classrooms, Minnesota’s courts, and veterans programs are all held harmless. He also noted the plan does not raise taxes, but it does provide tax relief to the middle class which would help stimulate the economy.
“It’s hard work to craft a budget that reduces spending, but we think most Minnesotans can live within these parameters and that we can begin stimulating our economy,” Benson said. “Unlike Governor Dayton, we will not be raising taxes and we will achieve a balanced budget.”
