ST. PAUL – State Representative Mike Benson (R-Rochester) said he was disappointed Governor Mark Dayton failed to follow through on promises to significantly reduce state spending and reform government in his long-awaited balanced budget proposal.
“The voters told us in November to quit wasting their money and spend only what you have,” Benson said. “Yet Governor Dayton has now proposed a budget that spends $5 billion more than last year – and the State is broke.”
With Minnesota facing a $6.2 billion budget deficit, Benson said Governor Dayton took the easy way out by calling for tax increases. Dayton’s plan would raise taxes by more than $4 billion and create the highest income tax rate in the country.
Benson also noted that Dayton’s budget increases state spending by 22 percent over the current level. That means our current $32 billion budget would skyrocket to $37 billion for the next two years if the Governor’s plan becomes law.
Benson sees little chance of that.
“Minnesota is $6 billion in the hole, and the Governor only wants $485 million in net budget cuts,” Benson said. “The Legislature approved nearly $1 billion in reductions last week and the Governor already vetoed our plan. Everyone knows this state has a spending problem, yet all Governor Dayton wants to do is throw more of your money at it and hope it disappears. The Legislature will have a balanced budget approved by the end of March, and it will not include tax increases.”
