ST. PAUL – After listening to Governor Mark Dayton’s State of the State Address, State Representative Mike Benson (R-Rochester) said he found areas of agreement and disagreement within the Governor’s priorities.
“I’m pleased to hear he shares my vision of creating a better job climate in the State of Minnesota,” Benson said. “I was also disappointed to learn that he still wants to raise taxes and also wants to spend money we don’t have.”
Benson said it was critical that Governor Dayton’s top focus was on jobs, and believes the legislature and the governor can find areas of agreement to grow new jobs and help improve the economy.
On the other hand, Dayton stressed the need to spend more in certain areas of government while failing to address how to eliminate Minnesota’s $6.2 billion budget deficit. He also noted that when he unveils his balanced budget proposal, it will contain income tax increases.
“Minnesotans simply cannot afford to pay more in taxes in order to satisfy a 27 percent growth in spending among state government programs,” Benson said. “Enacting tax increases will only worsen the state of our state, and prevent more people from creating jobs.”
