March 16 Legislative Update

Neighbors,

Recently I shared the good news of Minnesota’s $1.2 billion surplus. This surplus allows Minnesota to put kids first, and using the state’s $1 billion of cash reserves to pay back the entire additional education shift passed as part of the budget agreement with Governor Dayton last year. The first repayment will also be made on the $2 billion education shift Democrats passed when they controlled the Legislature in 2010. This is what is right for our kids and keeps our state in strong financial health.

Yesterday, I voted for a bill on the House Floor to pay back the K-12 shift that was included in the final budget agreement in 2011 with Governor Dayton. HF2083 pays back all of last year’s shift and begins payments on the debt left on schools by the previous Legislature. As a co-author of this bill, I believe it puts our kids first – paying back our schools is very important and it improves our state’s overall fiscal position.

A group of bipartisan members held a news conference last week on the House Small Business Caucus agenda for 2012. This bipartisan initiative looks to improve the climate for small businesses in Minnesota. The Small Business Caucus has proposed a package of bills to help with taxes, finance & investment, and removing barriers for small businesses.

Please contact my office with any state legislative questions or concerns you may have at 651-296-4226.

Have a great weekend.
