St. Paul—Ken Krueger of Blaine, age 87, received the prestigious Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal in a ceremony held at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda on February 15th, 2012. This medal represents France’s highest military honor typically reserved for French nationals. It is bestowed upon a select few American soldiers in recognition of and gratitude for their valorous efforts in liberating France during the Second World War.
“It was an honor and a privilege to meet Mr. Krueger during the decoration ceremony where he received this much deserved award,” Rep. Tim Sanders said. “I am so grateful to him for his selfless service to America and his assistance to France during World War II. Our community is proud to have Mr. Krueger as a neighbor.”
Mr. Krueger was presented with the medals by the Deputy Commissioner of the MDVA, Reggie Worlds, on behalf of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the Consul General of France, Graham Paul, and the citizens of France. The National Order of the Legion of Honor was created by Napoléon Bonaparte in 1802 to acknowledge service rendered to France by persons of great merit and to celebrate their extraordinary contributions to the country. The decoration ceremony was held as part of the annual Veterans Day on the Hill, where Minnesota veterans are encouraged to become involved in the legislative process by meeting with their legislators.
Ken Krueger served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1943-1945 as a motor messenger. He was assigned to the 92nd Signal Battalion attached to the 15th Corps, frequently delivering messages to and from Patton’s Third Army headquarters. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central European Campaigns. For his courage and achievements, Ken was awarded both the Bronze Star and Good Conduct medals among several others.
Krueger is the subject of the book, Fighting For Delphine, published in 2008, as well as a documentary film entitled As Promised: Return To Fénétrange, which chronicles his journey back to a small French village to fulfill a sixty-seven-year-old promise. The Minnesota-based film is currently raising funds to complete production. For more information about the documentary or the book, please visit: www.aspromised.net
