Neighbors,
Governor Mark Dayton announced his budget plan for Minnesota Tuesday morning. The plan, relying heavily on tax increases and expansive government programs and services, fails to address the reality that Minnesota is facing a 6.2 billion dollar budget deficit.
To get Minnesota on track we need to work together, not burden Minnesotans with more taxes. Balancing the budget requires us to work together and make fiscally responsible decisions for the future of Minnesota.
With nearly 4.1 billion in new taxes, Dayton’s proposal is the largest tax increase in history. Small businesses would be taxed at nearly 13.95% which is almost double the current level. Other states are working together to become more responsible in these tough economic times. However, Governor Dayton’s budget lacks any government or agency reforms and puts Minnesota on the path of a structural budget deficit. In the current biennium the state will see an increase in revenue by 6%, but this increase is not enough for the Governor’s budget. Under the proposed plan, government would see a 22% increase in spending. In a time when families across our state are not seeing increases in their pay checks, we cannot expect them to shoulder the burden of expanding our state’s spending.
We have the opportunity to come together and create realistic, responsible, priority based state spending. Our state needs reform. State agencies and services used by all Minnesotans must become more efficient and streamlined if we are to create an open, growing business climate.
