Weekly Update

This week provided a multitude of opportunities to listen to the business community as we work together to bring jobs back to Minnesota. As Vice Chair I was able to travel with with Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee Chair Joe Hoppe (34B) , we met with Minnesotans in Brainerd, St.Cloud and Willmar.

During these visits, we heard from businesses stressing how redundant government permitting processes, inefficient accounting and duplicative agencies are placing a suffocating burden on our small businesses.

It is not enough to provide temporary relief; we must fundamentally redesign the structure of the processes that government uses in dealing with businesses. Several times over the course of my visit with business owners they offered tangible ideas of how to structurally change government in ways that would reduce some of burdens on their businesses. One owner highlighted the fact that storm water is regulated by eight different government agencies. Another pivotal example came from a business owner that shared their concerns over the process of Sales Tax Auditing and its burden on both the business and the consumer. These open and honest conversations about how to make business more efficient are critical to making Minnesota successful.

This week I also visited a local Carpenters Training Center. This public/private partnership between unions and private business is an innovative solution to cooperative employment and training. This joint venture is the foundation of a strong, stable workforce that continues to provide highly skilled workers to our communities. It is a model that we must use as we look at other areas if we are to maintain, grow and keep jobs in Minnesota.

I look forward to working together to bring relief to businesses and get Minnesota’s economy rolling again.
