Friends,
Last Friday, Governor Pawlenty and legislative leaders from both
parties announced an agreement to reform the General Assistance Medical
Care program (GAMC). The bipartisan solution will continue to provide
health care to Minnesota’s sickest and poorest while introducing
nation-leading reforms for improved cost-savings and patient outcomes.
This shows that the legislature still has the ability to put priorities
ahead of politics and work together for positive solutions.
The GAMC solution offers several benefits. First, it is a long-term
solution to ensure the people most in need will continue to receive
health care. It also saves taxpayers over $700 million this budget
cycle alone and turns around a previously unsustainable program.
Finally it utilizes innovative reforms to improve the way we deliver
safety net health care.
Most importantly this agreement focuses on people and priorities. Hard
work and negotiation produced innovative reforms addresses the needs of
these people and the realities of our state’s fiscal situation. The
new program will place patients in programs better meeting their
specific needs, and promoting improved health outcomes while reducing
costs.
There are two months left in this legislative session and several
important issues still need resolution. I am hopeful the cooperation and
collaboration can continue as we address the priorities of Minnesotans.
This agreement demonstrated our ability to find a solution for a
sustainable safety net. I am confident we can continue to find
solutions for a balanced budget, quality job growth and economic
recovery. The citizens of Blaine and all of Minnesota deserve nothing
less.
Sincerely,
Tim
