"Voting" With Their Feet

Dear Neighbor,

This week the Freedom Foundation issued a report that Minnesota is losing hundreds of millions in state revenue because people are “voting with their feet” and moving to places with more favorable tax climates.

This comes as no surprise to me. At my small business forum last fall and at my recent town hall listening sessions, Minnesota’s tax burden was a central issue of concern to job providers and residents alike.

Minnesota’s tax burden is among the worst in the nation (in 2009, it was 8th highest). We rank in the bottom five of the Small Business Survival Index. Minnesota’s free market job providers and families are weighed down by taxes, regulation and government interference.

As the report shows, the out-migration of people and industry also impacts the government’s bottom line. When individuals and businesses leave the state, they take jobs, investment dollars, and tax revenue with them. We will never solve our recurring budget problems if we continue to drive away people and businesses.

As you and I know, lasting economic recovery and renewed opportunity will come from the free market and from Minnesota’s dynamic workforce. The legislature’s first task must be to stop harming our business climate. We need to start relieving the pervasive uncertainty causing individuals and job providers to hold back from investment and growth.

Next, we must take positive steps to empower job providers and give them the tools for growth. In Governor Pawlenty’s State of the State address today, the Governor outlined his Jobs Creation Bill to free our job providers and jumpstart our economy. It includes corporate and small business income tax reductions, research credits, capital gains tax reductions, and investment credits and incentives.

I will support this bill and with it the businesses and families of Blaine it benefits. When we have freed our job providers and given the tools for growth, the “votes” will show that Minnesota is doing the right things to attract, develop and promote prosperity.

Sincerely,

Tim
