Friends and Neighbors,
Much of this week was spent in Committee Hearings. With relatively little action on the House Floor, I had the opportunity to meet with some great people from Blaine.
In this issue:
1. Blaine Boys Hockey Team
2. Legislative Survey To Be Tabulated
3. Blaine Residents Come To St. Paul
4. We Should Not Reward Failure
1. Blaine Boys Hockey Team
Congratulations to the Blaine Boys Hockey Team! They have had an amazing 24-3-1 season so far, which is cumulating in a great post season run. It has been exciting to watch them in the State Tournament. Led by a strong group of Seniors they made an amazing showing to make it to the State Tournament. With their 5-0 win over Rochester, I’m looking forward to watching them play tonight and tomorrow! Good luck Bengals!
2. Legislative Survey To Be Tabulated
Starting on March 30th my 2009 Legislative Survey will be tabulated. So if you have not yet taken my survey please be certain to do so. You can find it on my website at www.house.mn/51A.
3. Blaine Residents Come To St. Paul
This week I had the opportunity to meet with some Muslim Americans from Blaine. It was a great chance to have an open conversation on how we can work together on many issues going on at the state level.
I also met with a number of AFSCME Union members from Blaine. We discussed a number of issues; include the current status of the state budget. It was great to have a large number of people from Blaine in St. Paul this week.
4. We Should Not Reward Failure
This week the House K-12 Education Policy and Oversight Committee approved a bill, HF 501, which would let schools graduate students who do not meet the basic standard math test. The bill would create a five-year grace period for the thousands of students who may not pass the exam. They’d still take the test but could re-test twice after remedial work; if they still aren’t proficient they’d graduate anyway.
This piece of legislation does not move Minnesota forward, but it undermines the goal of the educational system in our state. If we want our students to succeed once they graduate we need to make sure they can meet the basic standards set out to achieve graduation.
That is all for now. Just a reminder, you can find my latest news columns on my website www.house.mn/51A. There you will also find Audio Commentary on the issues. If you use iTunes you can subscribe to my podcast in iTunes. Just search “Rep. Tim Sanders” in the iTunes store.
As always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have on legislative issues.
Until next time,
Tim
