GOVERNOR SHOWS STRONG LEADERSHIP IN STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

By Tim Sanders
State Representative

Today I had honor of attending Governor Pawlenty’s State of the State address. It is a tradition that is required by our state constitution and allows for the people of Minnesota to better understand what is going on at the state level.

In this speech the Governor announced several initiatives he would like to implement that will get Minnesota’s finances back in positive territory. Legislative leaders have said this financial deficit is due to a lack of jobs in Minnesota. I agree with them that we need to bring good paying jobs to our state.

In order to do that I fully support the Minnesota Jobs Recovery Act as proposed by Governor Pawlenty. This act would make Minnesota a better place for businesses to grow. When we currently have the third highest business tax rate in the world we need to take corrective action. By lowering this we can bring more job creators to our state and get people back to work.

Blaine has a strong tradition of small business owners. Many of our small business have been a staple of our community for a long time. However, they are also suffering from the current state of our economy. The proposal of a 25% refundable tax credit for these small business owners is exactly what they need. With this credit they can reinvest in their company, add jobs, and revitalize our main street.

We should also remove some of the red tape they have to go through. Instead of making them file for sales tax rebates on equipment, let’s exempt them from the start. We can save money on the state level by eliminating paperwork and red tape, and save businesses time and money with not having to jump through these hoops.

The Governor’s leadership on these initiatives is just what we need to get our economy running again. I look forward to working with other members of the House on both sides of the aisle to implement these ideas and return fiscal responsibility back to our state government.
