A TARGETED INVESTMENT IN OUR RECOVERY

To the Editor:

While there are signs of recovery on the horizon, many Minnesotans are still struggling with the difficult realities of this recession. More than 220,000 Minnesotans are unemployed; and that includes the more than 4,000 Coon Rapids and Andover residents.

Those who are working are earning and spending less. That has caused a steep drop in state revenue, putting unprecedented strain on Minnesota’s finances. We’re facing a $1.2 billion deficit this session and an estimated $5.4 billion next year. That means many tough decisions in the months ahead.

My highest priority as your legislator is focusing on the root of our economic recovery – job creation. According to State Economist Tom Stinson, one of Minnesota’s most effective tools in that effort is a responsible, jobs-focused bonding bill like the one the House rolled out last week.

By targeting shovel-ready projects, we can put thousands back on the job – renovating classrooms, repairing bridges, fixing leaky roofs, and more.

A bonding bill won’t employ every Minnesotan. But it will get thousands off the bench, spending in our local businesses. It will improve Minnesota’s aging infrastructure and lay the foundation for future economic growth. That’s why I’ll do everything I can to put that bill on the Governor’s desk as quickly as possible.

Your input helps me make the best decisions possible on your behalf. Please contact me with your questions, concerns, and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.
