To the Editor:
Minnesota has begun to see slow but encouraging signs of economic recovery. According to the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), unemployment in Minnesota fell last month to 7.1 percent. A report released in early October confirmed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has created 11,500 jobs in Minnesota since February.
Minnesota is not out of the woods yet. Nearly 3,000 people are out of work in Coon Rapids alone. Thousands more are underemployed. The next 6-12 months will be difficult for families and businesses. But the challenges ahead should not discourage Minnesotans or diminish our resolve for economic recovery.
Right now we need to be working harder than ever to harness new ideas, pool our limited resources, and build Minnesota’s recovery one piece at a time. That is exactly what State Economist Tom Stinson is advocating the legislature do. According to Stinson, a strong, targeted bonding bill is critical to the health of our economy.
Past bonding bills have improved facilities at Anoka-Hennepin Community College, expanded Highway 10, and put infrastructure in place for the Northstar Commuter Rail Line. Investing wisely in economic infrastructure puts people to work and pays dividends for decades to come. By thinking responsibly and planning for the future we can build a stronger, more prosperous Minnesota economy.
That work begins today. As your representative I’ll continue doing everything I can to put people to work. I encourage your input, and I need your help. Please contact me with questions, concerns, and ideas.
