NEWTON GETS HIS WINGS

ST. PAUL, MN - State Representative Jerry Newton (DFL - Coon Rapids) was recently inducted into the Anoka Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and promoted to the grade of Major in the CAP. Minnesota Wing Commander Colonel Thomas Theis presented Rep. Newton with a certificate authorizing his membership in this 68-year-old volunteer program.

"I spent a career on the ground in the army, so it’s nice to finally get my wings," said Rep. Newton, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major. “It’s an honor to be a member of this patriotic organization; to be associated with a group of individuals so selflessly committed to helping others.”

Later in the evening Rep. Newton was congratulated by retired US Air Force Colonel Kenneth Wofford, a former member of the Tuskegee Airmen - a group of African American pilots who flew with distinction in World War II.

“It as a thrill to meet Colonel Wofford - he is truly an American hero,” Newton said. “We owe him, and all our veterans, our sincerest thanks for putting themselves in harm’s way on our behalf.”

The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization with congressionally assigned duties that include emergency services (including search and rescue), aerospace education for youth and the general public, cadet programs, and national service.
