To the Editor:
It is an honor to serve Coon Rapids and Andover in the Minnesota House - a job that comes with responsibilities I take very seriously. My first term as your State Representative began just a few short weeks ago as the 2009 Legislative Session got underway. Facing a number of challenges, the legislature is hard at work already crafting policies to balance the budget, strengthen Minnesota communities, and rebuild our struggling economy.
Like 41 other states, Minnesota is facing a record budget deficit brought on by a worsening economic situation. In fact, the state is facing a record $4.8 billion budget deficit. State Economist Tom Stinson recently identified the current recession as the most severe Minnesota has confronted since World War II. Thirty thousand Minnesotans have lost their jobs over the last twelve months, and another 77,000 are expected to lose their jobs this year.
Together, these unprecedented challenges have cast Minnesota lawmakers into uncharted waters. Now, more than ever, we need to work together to see our state through this crisis. I am committed to that work, and pledge to devote all my efforts toward making Minnesota an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.
But I can’t do this work alone. I need your help and guidance throughout the legislative session. For that reason, I encourage you to contact me with your questions, comments, and concerns by phone at (651) 297-5723 or by email at rep.jerry.newton@house.mn. I look forward to hearing from you.
Jerry Newton
State Representative
