Bipartisan Jobs Task Force Meets Holds First Meeting - Panel explores ways to speed Minnesota’s economic recovery

ST. PAUL, MN – A bipartisan House Jobs Task Force met for the first time at the State Capitol today to discuss the ongoing recession and what the Legislature can do to help speed Minnesota’s economic recovery. Working with economic experts and business leaders, the Task Force will develop a jobs plan for the 2010 Legislative Session.

The group heard testimony from State Economist Tom Stinson, State Demographer Tom Gillaspy, Art Rolnick from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and others about the state of Minnesota’s economy and about strategies that have been used to jump start the economy during previous economic downturns.

“Our economy is starting to improve, but not at a pace equivalent to our neighboring states," Rep. Paul Rosenthal, (DFL-Edina, East Bloomington). “We need to explore every possible option to position Minnesota for a strong economic recovery, and make sure we’re working with economic experts, local businesses, and a broad range of Minnesotans to develop a workable and effective plan to move us from recession to recovery.”

As Vice-Chair of the Early Childhood Education Finance Division, Rep. Rosenthal will play a key role this session in implementing the Task Force’s recommendations. As the panel heard again about the importance of quality early childhood education in helping Minnesota sustain a skilled workforce, Rosenthal also noted the increased importance of higher education programs that focus on workforce development.

“One of the most cost effective strategies we can employ will be to shore the workforce development and worker retraining programs that are experiencing higher demand than they’ve seen in years,” said Rosenthal.

The Jobs Task Force will continue to meet throughout the legislative interim and will be outlining policy initiatives for the 2010 session. According to State Economist Tom Stinson, states that prepare well today for recovery will be in the best competitive economic position when the recession finally concludes. Rep. Rosenthal says that’s exactly the intention of the Jobs Task Force.

“We need to be ready, and we need to move quickly,” said Rosenthal. “Minnesotans are depending on it.”
