STATE REPRESENTATIVE PAUL ROSENTHAL APPOINTED TO JOBS TASK FORCE

ST. PAUL, MN – Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher has appointed State Representative Paul Rosenthal to a newly created bi-partisan House Jobs Task Force. Citing Minnesota’s historic unemployment numbers, Kelliher said the task force will focus on economic development, capital investments and tax policies aimed at creating significant job growth for Minnesotans.

“While we did get some encouraging news yesterday when we learned Minnesota’s unemployment rate had dropped a bit, we also we know job recovery is often one of the latest indicators to rebound in a recession," said Speaker Kelliher in naming the task force. “That is why we will continue to make job creation a top priority in the Minnesota House.”

The new task force will develop a jobs plan for the 2010 legislative session that will build on this year’s initiatives, with special emphasis on bio business, construction and green jobs. It will be headed by three members: Rep. Alice Hausman, Chair of the Capital Investment Committee, Rep. Ann Lenczewski, Chair of the Tax Committee and Rep. Tom Rukavina, Chair of the Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee.

“I can’t think of a more important mission for lawmakers right now than to create a jobs plan for the state that will get Minnesotans back to work” said Rep. Rosenthal. “One of the keys to turning our economy will be to look at ways in which we can continue to build and sustain a highly skilled workforce and expand workforce development and worker retraining programs that are experiencing higher demand than they’ve seen in years.”

Speaker Kelliher expects the Minnesota House Jobs Task Force to begin meeting in September and continue holding sessions throughout the fall in preparation for the 2010 Legislative Session.

“I am grateful to Rep. Rosenthal for agreeing to serve on this task force,” said Kelliher. “As Vice-chair of the Early Childhood Education Committee and an independent business person, he brings an invaluable perspective to the group. Along with the depth of knowledge and experience the other members bring to the table, I’m confident we’ll see a solid plan that will help get Minnesotans back to work and bring our state back to economic prosperity.”
