Keeping A Roof Over Their Heads

Dear Editor:

I ran for this office because I understand government to be our common tool for solving problems that are too big for individuals alone. As a new member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, I am learning how committees work to best serve the interests and solve the problems of our citizens.

Serving on the Housing Finance and Policy and Public Health Finance Division is an invaluable lesson about the full extent of our housing crisis in the current economic climate. Too many Minnesotans are a job loss or car accident away from keeping a roof over their heads.

Rising rates of unemployment, foreclosures, and homelessness are leaving increasing numbers of Minnesotans vulnerable. They need our help. I am working to see that those in most need don’t get lost in the process of balancing our massive budget deficit.

Even in these challenging times, we can do more with less to ensure that all Minnesotans have a basic resource like housing. I welcome your thoughts as I listen, learn and work to find solutions to the problems we face as a state.
