February 10 Legislative Update

Hello from St. Paul!

I would like to first thank all of you that attended your local precinct caucus on Tuesday evening, it is a great way to get involved at the grassroots level and it is so encouraging to see constituents getting involved in the local government process. I really enjoyed being at Eastview High School for caucus night – it is always an honor to meet with all of you.

Yesterday on the House Floor, we heard and passed HF 1766 with bipartisan support. HF 1766 is a bill that protects child care providers from being forced to pay child care union dues out of childcare subsidy payments. After Governor Dayton issued an executive order for child care worker unionization last fall, this bill was brought forward to protect them if that executive order stands in court. Without this legislation, if a future unionization is successful, childcare providers who get state money could be forced into unionization without their consent because union dues would be taken out automatically, which has happened in other states.

This morning, we were notified that Governor Dayton vetoed all four bills in the lawsuit reform package passed by the House last week. These lawsuit reform bills are designed to improve the fairness and efficiency of Minnesota’s legal system, stop frivolous lawsuits early, and improve Minnesota’s business climate. This is a disappointment, as these reforms received bipartisan support and would allow for quicker resolutions in litigation.

Finally, it was fun to have MN Zoo Day at the Capitol this week on Wednesday. Several animals made an appearance including an owl, various snakes, an armadillo and a chinchilla in the Capitol Rotunda. It was exciting to have what is both a state and local treasure on display for legislators to see.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any state issue.

Enjoy your weekend,

Tara
