EMAIL UPDATE

The budget, community events, Mack family news

Greetings From the Capitol-

We still are working hard and searching for a budget breakthrough in St. Paul. The biggest news this week came when we announced the Legislature is offering a compromise in three top-priority areas: K-12 education, public safety and judiciary.

Our new education offer is a true compromise, providing all the spending the governor wants (an additional $80 million), along with key reforms the Legislature wants. We also provide $30 million more for public safety and the judiciary. These three areas make up approximately 50 percent of our state budget, getting them wrapped up would put us a long way toward putting a full plan in place.

We face a state shutdown if a budget is not in place by the end of June. A shutdown is not good for the state and it is not necessary since we have offered the Governor a balanced budget that increases spending by 6 percent. That's an increase not being seen anywhere else in the economy and it should be enough to accommodate the priorities of Minnesota. I encourage the Governor to accept this compromise on these budget components so we can begin to get the remaining pieces in place and put the shutdown talk to rest.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
I invite you to participate in Apple Valley festivities this weekend, including Get Outdoors Day at the Minnesota Zoo and the Community Ride Event for bicyclists.

GO Day at the zoo takes place Saturday. It is a federal program designed to help reconnect our youth to the great outdoors. The Minnesota Zoo has been selected as one of seven places nationally to be named a GO Day signature site in 2011. Highlights of the event include Facebook coupons providing free admission to children (click here), Dr. Seuss readings (click here), a puppet show (click here) and other zoo experiences (click here).

The Community Ride Event is 2 p.m. Sunday at Kelley Park (6855 Fortino St., Apple Valley). Click here for registration information. Local officials along with people from all over the community will be getting on their bikes and riding the 12-mile course around Apple Valley. The fee is $3 per person or $5 for a family and it includes a goody bag for the first 100 people. This event is a great way to be active while connecting with other people from our community.

MACK FAMILY NEWS
On a personal note, my husband and I are expecting a baby girl in two weeks and I want to thank many of you who have sent along your well wishes as our family grows. I will do my best to remain in contact with constituents, but please be patient if a response from me is delayed and also please understand if I am unable to attend some upcoming community events. Again, I appreciate your support during this exciting and busy time.

Have a good weekend!
Tara
