Hello From the Capitol!
This week we received the new economic forecast for Minnesota and it shows our budget shortfall to be $1 billion less than was announced last November. That's good news, but it also means we are still $5 billion short.
The updated information shows an increase in revenue of almost 9 percent, but that's outweighed by our state's commitments to spend 29 percent more in the upcoming biennium, pushing expenditures to around $39 billion.
We'll spend the next few months at the Capitol working to reconcile our budget. The House is on track to have its budget targets issued by March 25 and we anticipate Gov. Mark Dayton will be working on a revised budget of his own, taking into account the new budget information. The Constitution states we must have a balanced budget by the end of the fiscal year in June.
The most important thing for us to remember is we must keep our focus on helping people get back to work and getting our businesses going again. Those are the keys to a sustainable future and a return to prosperity.
I will keep you updated as we make progress in St. Paul. Please continue to provide me with your input by e-mailing me at rep.tara.mack@house.mn.
Sincerely,
Tara
