ST. PAUL, MN—State Representative Tara Mack (R- Apple Valley, Burnsville) and other Republican legislators recently sent Governor Tim Pawlenty a letter urging him to eliminate funding cuts to nursing homes, day programs and disability services.
“Minnesotans are tightening their belts and living on less,” said Mack. “We must do the same thing at the Capitol, but our nursing homes and disabled services are barely scraping by even when fully funded. The February budget forecast provides us with an opportunity to prevent these devastating cuts.”
Gov. Pawlenty’s budget proposal was based on the November budget forecast which put the deficit at $1.2 billion, but the forecasted deficit dropped by $209 million in February. Mack and her colleagues want the Governor to use those funds to refund the 2.5 percent cut ($37.3 million) to home and community-based services to the elderly, disabled and nursing homes.
“Balancing a billion dollar budget deficit requires making some difficult decisions,” said Mack. “We will need to make painful cuts in many areas, but I believe we can accomplish this without negatively impacting the elderly and Minnesotans with disabilities.”
