LETTER TO THE EDITOR

REP. MACK THANKS CONSTITUENTS FOR ATTENDING TOWN HALL

To the Editor,

I want to thank everyone who was able to attend my town hall meeting with Sen. Gerlach at the Galaxie Library in Apple Valley on March 2. Town halls are a great opportunity for me to hear from you directly and help me better serve as your representative. If you were unable to attend, two of the major topics we discussed were balancing the budget and making Minnesota's business climate better.

There were several small business owners in attendance expressing frustration with the struggles they face in trying to keep their doors open and maintain jobs. They have had to cut wages or lay off employees. The consensus seems clear: reduce the tax and regulatory burden on Minnesota small businesses. In the legislature, we are working on a proposal for a Jobs Creation Bill which would allow small businesses to exclude 20 percent of income from taxation and encourage investment by giving tax credits to those who invest in start-ups. I think these reforms are a step in the right direction.

I also heard from many people who have lost their job and are seeking employment opportunities at a time when job providers are not able to hire. Implementing job-growing policies directly relates to balancing the budget. On Tuesday the updated budget forecast was released. The good news is that our current budget deficit is now less than $1 billion, but the very bad news is that the projected shortfall for 2012-2013 has grown to $5.8 billion. Obviously we must bring spending down to sustainable levels, while also recognizing that 77 percent of the current deficit is due to a decline in personal income tax revenue. We must put Minnesotans back to work and pursue policies that allow job providers to expand and bring on more employees.

I encourage you to continue to contact me on the issues we face this session. You can reach me anytime by phone at 651-296-5506 or by email rep.tara.mack@house.mn.

It is an honor to serve as your voice in St. Paul.

Sincerely,

State Representative Tara Mack
Apple Valley and Burnsville
