PRESS RELEASE

MACK SUCCESSFULLY AMENDS EDUCATION OMNIBUS BILLS: Initiatives will improve childhood literacy and charter school programs

ST PAUL – During debate last week on the K-12 Education Omnibus Finance bill and Early Childhood & Family Education Omnibus Finance bill, two amendments offered by State Representative Tara Mack [R-Burnsville] were adopted prior to final passage. One amendment will improve childhood literacy programs and one will allow students at charter schools to participate in extracurricular activities at traditional high schools in their district.
“The Burnsville and Apple Valley areas have thriving charter schools and my amendment will allow students at those schools to participate in extra-curricular activities – like athletics and fine arts – that currently may not be available to them,” said Rep. Mack. “Minnesota has a long and rich history of promoting innovations in education – establishing the nation’s first charter school among them – and I see my amendment as simply improving an already great idea.”
Rep. Mack’s amendment to the Early Childhood & Family Education Omnibus bill would reprioritize existing funding and direct it towards proven literacy programs for children. “The programs my amendment will fund are proven to increase literacy and learning for children who need help the most,” said Mack. “Studies have shown that targeting early learning resources to specific groups of children will provide some of the best long term returns on our public investments.
“Throughout last year’s campaign and since the start of the legislative session I have stressed the importance of improving our state’s education system,” said Mack. “My seat on the House Early Childhood Education committee has allowed me to work towards making those improvements and making sure that education funding is one of our state’s top priorities.”
Both omnibus finance bills – with Rep. Mack’s amendments – will each move to a joint House-Senate conference committee where differences in the each chambers’ legislation will be negotiated until one proposal emerges. The conference committee for the K-12 Education bill is scheduled to begin this week.
