St. Paul, MN – Representatives Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove) and Tara Mack (R-Apple Valley) introduced the, “Emergency Jobs Stimulus Bill” to help bring news jobs to the state of Minnesota and encourage current Minnesota companies to stay, expand and grow.
“The idea is very simple; if you bring your business to Minnesota and stay for 5 years, we will exempt you from the 9.8% tax rate,” said Zellers, “And if your business is already here, we want you to expand and will exempt any new jobs as well.” Rep. Zellers and other members of the House Republican Caucus introduced the bill as an alternative to higher taxes and massive deficit spending from Washington, D.C.
Senate chief author, Sen. Geoff Michel (R-Edina) said, "We have a jobs deficit in Minnesota. This state needs to send a strong message to job creators that we need you and want to help. This legislation will help send that message."
The Democrat leadership in the Minnesota House and Senate introduced their solution to the budget crisis last week in the form of a shell bill that will, ‘…have Minnesota ready to receive funds from the Federal Stimulus bill.’ Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Delano) described this style of leadership as, “Putting out a bunch of empty buckets in hopes of catching dollars raining down from Washington; that isn’t leadership, that’s desperation because you have no new ideas of your own,” Emmer continued, “Our citizens, our taxpayers and especially our business owners deserve better; this bill gives our state a chance to compete for new jobs.”
At a time when the State of Minnesota faces record budget deficits, rising unemployment and declining revenue – there seem to be two ways of thinking. One, we can wait for the Federal Government to come up with another economic “stimulus” package that adds another trillion dollars to our national debt. Or, we give business owners and entrepreneurs tax relief and “grow” our way out of tough economic times with new jobs. Representative Tara Mack (R-Apple Valley) believes the choice is easy, “If the choice is waiting for Washington to print more money or putting our faith in the workers and business owners of our state – I believe in the creativity, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of the American workers to grow our State’s economy.”
Zellers and the co-authors believe this bill will offer a bold alternative for our State in place of the usual choices of raise taxes, cut programs and using accounting shifts. “Our state and nation got into this problem because of runaway spending and slowing job growth,” Zellers concluded, “The taxpayers and business owners of our state will now have a clear choice: bring in new jobs and encourage expansion to grow our way out these tough economic times; or, wait for Washington to print and spend our grandchildren’s retirement.”
