NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO RETURN TO FAILED ECONOMIC POLICIES

(ST. PAUL) – Minnesota faces a $5 billion budget deficit, according to numbers released by state finance officials today. The forecast budget deficit for the 2012-13 biennium is $1.2 billion less than the projection released late last year.

Rep. Andrew Falk (DFL-Murdock) noted that the forecast released today is a slightly better than anticipated. “The numbers released today mean we have to make less in cuts. It doesn’t change the fact that I am concerned about the fragile economic recovery Minnesota faces. Farmers and families cannot afford to revert to the failed policies that got us into this mess."

Governor Dayton immediately responded by reducing cuts to long term care, nursing homes, and Minnesota Care. “I sent Governor Dayton a letter last week asking him to protect health care for our seniors if the forecast improved,” said Falk. “I am pleased he recognized my concerns and reversed those proposed cuts.”

Noting that the legislature is about to begin its third month of the legislative session, Rep. Falk called on the Republican majority to produce a balanced budget. “The GOP campaigned on an all cuts budget last year,” said Falk. “They have yet to produce any solutions that show how to cut $5 billion. My priority is to protect middle class workers and families. I pledge to support a budget that preserved Minnesota values of shared responsibility and broad prosperity.”
