February 15, 2011 (ST. PAUL) — Governor Mark Dayton released his plan to balance Minnesota’s state budget today, a proposal that would responsibly erase a $6.2 billion deficit.
State Representative Andrew Falk (DFL – Murdock) released the following statement on the governor’s proposal:
“Governor Dayton has kept his promises to responsibly and fairly balance Minnesota’s budget — now it’s the Republicans turn to keep their promise and put their all-cuts budget on the table. The governor’s plan stops the reckless cutting of local government aid, protecting middle-class families from higher property taxes, and protecting services like police, fire, snowplowing, and street repair. Governor Dayton’s proposal also invests in our future: increasing education funding by $52 million, with $33 million dedicated to funding optional all-day kindergarten.
“The governor’s budget plan clearly demonstrates his understanding of what makes Minnesota great. For too long, the budget has been balanced on the backs of middle class and working class families. This budget, through shared responsibility, offers the promise of broad prosperity. With increased education funding — combined with meaningful reform — improving our schools and leading us toward a brighter future; and funding to keep our towns and counties safe while lowering property taxes, this proposal is a first step in creating a better Minnesota."
