LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we enter the third week of the 2011 Legislative Session, state
lawmakers have introduced legislation for consideration in the weeks
ahead. I am writing today to ask for your input on two specific pieces
of legislation that if passed would have a particularly strong impact on
our rural communities.
---------------------------

HR002 – Cutting Education, Other Funding
State Rep. Mark Buesgens (Republican – Jordan) recently introduced a
resolution (HR002) to cut state government programs, including K-12
education, by 17 percent. That would amount to a $2.4 billion cut to
Minnesota schools. You can find the bill online at:
http://tinyurl.com/68vqh8x.

Would you support this legislation? Why or why not?

SF60 – Cutting Higher Education and Local Government Aid

State Sen. Claire Robling (Republican – Jordan) introduced
legislation today that would cut property tax refunds for Minnesota
homeowners and eliminate $460 million in Local Government Aid (LGA). LGA
helps rural communities afford public safety, safe drinking water, and
other basic services while holding down property taxes.

The bill would also cut $50 million from the University of Minnesota
and $50 million from MnSCU campuses like Minnesota West Community and
Technical College in Canby causing tuition to increase substantially for
students and their families. You can find the bill online at:
http://tinyurl.com/6e3qfu2.

Would you support this legislation? Why or why not?

---------------------------

Throughout the legislative session, I need your input on bills like
these. Your opinion matters and your ideas inform the legislation that
governs our state. Please contact me with your questions, concerns, and
suggestions on these issues and others in the weeks and months to come.
As always, I look forward to hearing from you.
